Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

At Avigail Residence, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) shapes the way we care for and support the young people who live with us. Our approach is not about managing or controlling behaviour, but about recognising and understanding it. We believe that behaviour is a way of communicating, often influenced by life experiences, trauma, or unmet needs. That’s why we don’t ask, “What’s wrong with this young person?” but instead, “What have they been through?” and “What are they expressing?” PBS provides us with a compassionate and consistent framework, enabling us to build trust, offer stability, and create positive relationships. Our priority is to connect first and to guide from a place of empathy, helping young people feel heard, valued, and supported.
We provide high-quality supported accommodation for children and young peoplee

How PBS Shapes Our Daily Work

Change happens when young adults feel safe — and that safety comes from consistency, connection, and genuine care. At Avigail Residence, we use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) to notice patterns and understand what might trigger or heighten challenging behaviours. These triggers can come from the environment, communication styles, or even the overall atmosphere. Once we understand these factors, we adapt our approach — whether it’s adjusting routines, offering clearer ways to communicate, or creating a calmer, more supportive space. Over time, PBS helps young adults develop their own skills to manage strong emotions, giving them practical tools for self-regulation and independence in a way that works best for them.

Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs)

Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) Every young person at Avigail Residence has their own Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) — a practical, personalized guide created with your involvement, as well as that of your key worker, therapists, and other professionals.
They are:
  • All about you and easy to read
  • Updated regularly to suit your needs
Personalised to what works best for you — emotionally, socially, and in the way you feel about the world A BSP explains why the behaviours happen — whether it’s a way of coping, asking for help, avoiding stress, or staying in control.
It also tells us how we can best assist you:
  • What comforts you
  • What relaxes you
  • How we can behave when things get too much
The goal isn’t just to get through the tough moments — it’s to help you make long-term, positive adjustments that you can carry along with you, whether at school, with your family, or in your future households.
Our Focus

A Better Quality of Life

At Avigail Residence, our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach is all about helping you live a better, happier life.
We wish for you to feel:
  • Heard and noticed, not criticized
  • Empowered and cared for, not manipulated
By giving you a sense of security and support, we give you the autonomy to make baby steps towards progress — to play around with new modes of self-expression, build trust in others, and evolve emotionally on your own terms.

We realize genuine change takes time. We work with you with patience, scaffolding, and steady support as you gradually feel more competent to manage your world and more hopeful about the future.
